Unorthodox denim can spice up any outfit

Denim is easy to incorporate into both casual and formal outfits.

Denim is a fabric that has stood the test of time, both literally and figuratively. The classic indigo textile hasn’t gone out of style since its emergence in the 19th century, which isn’t something many other trendy pieces can say. Denim has had several claims to fame, from James Dean’s timeless mid-’50s white tee-and-jeans pairing to Justin and Britney’s full denim ensembles at the 2001 American Music Awards.

Thanks to the innovations of fashion, there are constantly more new and exciting ways you can wear denim, especially when your typical denim jacket, jeans or overalls have become a bit bland. Here are just a few novel denim styles that’ll shake up and modernize your wardrobe.

The Printed Shorterall

Bring your typical overalls up a notch by ditching the typical blue shade and full pant leg. This pastel, oil slick-printed pair from Urban Outfitters is perfect for any spring outing, whether you’re hitting up a music festival or just chilling on the quad with your friends.

For those slightly more chilly days you can wear your shorteralls with a long-sleeve top (Brandy Melville), black turtleneck or some tights to warm things up. However, a plain or graphic tee would go nicely with more favorable weather. Throw on some suede flat ankle booties (Tory Burch) and you’re good to go.

If you’re done with overalls altogether, have no fear. You can still wear your denim in jumpsuit form. Take the fabric back to its blue-collar roots with this chic denim romper (Forever 21), reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter’s iconic ’40s work suit look. Keep it simple, yet classic, with some white sneakers and chic sunglasses. A brown or black belt could also work well.

To spark up your outfit, add a bright, fun lip. This red-orange shade from Rimmel is perfect for spring, and has been seen on everyone from actress Margot Robbie to supermodel and resident It-girl Kendall Jenner. Braided hair and some gold jewelry would add the perfect finishing touches onto this new, and soon-to-be trending, denim item.

Try switching out your flannel for a just-as-cute and cozy oversized denim button-down (Old Navy) and you’ll never run out of lazy day looks again. You can wear the latter just as you would the former — over a tee (try a cool cut-up one like this to add some extra edge) with some ripped jeans or leggings. Add a pair of statement shoes like these black boots (Tommy Hilfiger).

Another chic addition would be an absolute spring must-have: a brightly-hued bag. This hot pink one by Marc Jacobs works with way more outfits than you think, and also helps to bring the sometimes passé tee-and-jeans look up a notch.

The Denim Midi

Although denim minis might be a little too mid-2000s for most people’s tastes, the denim midi is the perfectly modern take on the denim skirt. This one (Zara) includes some cool patches for a pop of color that takes your typical denim to the next level.

Pair your midi with a graphic tee, cropped or regular. One printed with a primary color, like this statement T-shirt from American Apparel, would be especially great to bring out the colorful patches on the skirt. Throw on a plain gold necklace, like a vintage gold chain as pictured. Recycle the white sneakers from the romper outfit and you have a casual, not-so-plain spring outfit.
